Better late than never....its been a busy coupla months!! I seen Alexis's birth story and thought I'd like to write out Jayda's. It's rather long, so bear with me....
Fist off, my origional dd was April 18th. In February the doc move it to May 2nd because she was consistantly 2 weeks small on her last 3 u/s's.
So, After being a week late for my May 2nd due date, I started getting incerdibly itchy all over on Wednesday May 10th...and I mean UNBEARABLY itchy. So, we took a trip up to ldr that night. They set me up on the moniter, seen baby was fine and called my ob. He ordered a pregnancy safe antihistamine and said I could go home. So, we got home at about 11pm, I took the pill, and went to sleep till about 5 am when I woke up unbearably itcy yet again. So, I told dh I was going back to ldr, and to go to work (he also works at the hospital) but he wouldn't have it. So, we went up to ldr and my ob was there on rounds, so he looked at me and told me the only real cure was to have the baby...would I like to start induction?? Ummm....hmmmm....YES PLEASE!!! lol So, he checked me and told me he was going to go with the gel, becuase he didn't think I would need the drip, the gel should do the trick. So, he put it in and I had to lay there on the moniter for 45 mins, and then I had to get up and walk for a half hour, come back do a strip, and walk again. They repeat this 4 times in hopes that the walking will start some contractions. On my 3rd walking trip, I noticed some fluid leaking, and lots of pressure, and told the nurse. She said to just keep an eye on it and see if it continues. So, we go off for our last walk, and there definately was leakage and I told the nurse. She decided to stick to the plan, which was to send me home if not real good contractions had started, and nothing significant had, but there were some. I was supposed to come back in the next morning if I wasn't in real labor yet, and they'd do a second round of the gel. So, home I went, itchy like crazy, and contracting a little, to walk my butt off. And walk we did. I didn't sleep much that night with the itchyness, and the anticipation, so dh and I got up early to walk and try to get a head start on contractions before we went back to ldr. I was having some regular, but not intense contractiong when we got up to ldr, so they hooked me up to the montiter. When my ob came in for rounds, he said he didn't want to do more gel, because of the water leak. He didn't want anything going "there" incase infection got started. This was Friday....he told me to go home and walk lots. If nothing happened over the weekend, come back Monday, and they'll start the drip. But he was very confident I may even be back later that day. They don't do inductions here over the weekend unless it's a major emergency because of less staffing. So, we went home yet again and walked, but by the end of that day, things pretty much had stopped. The next day, Saturday, we walked more, and there was absolutely nothing happening. I cried for the better part of the day because the itching had not stopped (I had broken the skin on my arms open from scratching) and I was incredibly uncomfortable from the pressure ect. Later that evening, I noticed that the fluid I was leaking was changing color, and getting a kind of foul smell, so dh and I headed up to ldr. The nurse looking after me that night was pretty concerned, but still, I ended up being sent home and told to come back on Sunday for a nst, then back on Monday. But absolutely no intercourse, no bathing ect. So, Sunday things are still the same, went for the nst, and they told me to come in at 7:30 am for my induction Monday.
Monday finally rolls around, and we are at the hospital at 7:30am sharp. They hook me up to the moniter (nothing was happening) and there I sat. At 9 they tell me my ob has meeting scheduled all day, and he asked another of the ob's from his office to consult. He was in surgery, but will be out soon. 11 rolls around and he still hadn't showed, so I asked the nurse what was going on. He went into another surgery ( ) and was coming to see me when he got out. But, he figured the plan would be to do another round of the gel. I kinda lost it at this point. I said no way....the reason they didn't do the second gel on Friday was because they were worried about the fluid leak and possible infection. All weekend I was told absolutely no intercourse and no baths...nothing was to go in or around "that area". Now I do have infection and they want to go ahead with the gel? I wasn't going to put my baby at risk and told her so. She told us to wait and talk to the ob. So, by 1:30, he still hadn't shown and dh and I were furious. When the nurse came in I told her we were leaving, no matter what happened I was not going to get the gel. She wanted me to sign papers saying that if I left and anything happened to me or my baby they weren't liable....so I told her where to shove it, and get a paper cut along the way. At this time we were quite mad at my ob....we thought he had brushed us off to this other guy, who in turn brushed us off. At this point dh and I were in tears...he was frusterated, and I was uncomfortable AND frusterated. We went home to try and figure out what we were going to do next. I was on the computer looking a few things up when the phone rings. It was my ob. He appologised like mad for the confusion. All the other ob was supposed to do was check in on me while I was getting the drip untill he was done at his meetings. He told me to come back the next morning, 7:30, and they would hook me up right away. And applogized some more. lol
Tuesday, May 16th, 6 days after the first attempt at induction with the gel, 14 days past my SECOND due date, I got my i.v. started at 8am. They start the pitocin out at very small doses to see how your body will react. It starts at 6 and every 15 mins gets doubled. They told me they let you get up to a dose of 190 and stay there for 2 hours, and if your still not in active labor they stop the pit, give you a nights rest and begin again in the am. My heart dropped thinking that that might happen to me. So, at about 10:30, they took me off the moniter and let me walk around for 15 miniute incriments, and come back for the dosage to be upped, and to do vitals. We did this till about 11:30, when I was getting bored...afterall, there's only so much walking you can do in a little hospital. So, we came back to my room to watch tv. At this point, I was still in an observation room because they don't put you in a delivery room till true labor is established. I got up to get a cup of tea at about 11:45, and noticed that on the way to the unit kitchen I was having a few contractions. Nothing big though. When the nurse came back at noon, I told her I was having some mild contractions, and she said they were still going to keep upping the dose till it was a good labor pattern. Lunch came at 12:15, and I decided to skip it cause I didn't want to have too full a stomach incase they had to do a c-section. At 12:30, I had what I like to call THE contraction while I was on the toilet....It was long and pretty hard and I knew this was it. I was a little suprised cause I thought they would be like atleast 4-5 mins apart, but they were one on top of the other at about 1.5 mins apart. At 12:45 I told them I felt alot of pressure like I had to push. The nurse said well, I guess we can check you....and took her sweet time finding the glove and the lube. Finally she checked and called to the other nurse to get a wheelchair and the closest delivery room ready, looked up at me and said "are you ready for a baby?" At that point I was at 9.5. So, they loaded me into the wheelchair and we went to the delivery room Getting from the chair to the bed was no small task because of all the pressure. Once I was on the bed, they started breaking it down for delivery and taking the end off, and calling my ob who luckly was in the hospital at the time. They were drawing something up in a syringe (I later found out it was an extra bit of pitocin) and dh asked if that was my Demerol, and she told him it was way too late for that. By this time I was hysterical...in lotsa pain and suprised that things went so fast, and pushing at the same time. They handed me the gas mask and told me to take deep breaths if I wanted to, and finally I did. It gave me the serenity to push. Then there was a gush of fluid.....there was a small bag of water that had built up around the baby after the big bag slowly leaked out, and there was meconeium in it...lots of it. So, they called for NICU and respiratory to come stat, and it seemed like only seconds before they were there. They told me to stop pushing cause her head was out and they suctioned her well...it seemed like it took forever till they said ok, give a really good push!! I did, and there she was, at 1:34pm! They put her on my belly for a miniute so dh could cut the cord, then they took her to finishe suctioning her and gave her oxygen. 15 miniutes after her delivery and suctioning her we got to cuddle her for a half hour, and then they took her for monitering in the NICU. S he was 8 lbs 7 oz's, and today, almost 10 weeks later she is almost 11 lbs.
I'm so glad I finally posted her story too....I seen Alexis's story and felt it was time to tell Jayda's too!!
